Renting a car in Japan offers the ultimate freedom to explore. However, refueling can be a challenge for first-timers due to Japanese-only interfaces and the three-color fuel system (Red, Yellow, Green).

Refueling is actually simple once you know the steps. This guide covers everything from fuel types and self-service procedures to pre-return refueling tips, helping you drive with confidence and focus on your journey.

Self-Service Refueling Steps in Japan

Step 1: Park and Turn Off the Engine

  • Apply the handbrake and turn off the engine.

  • The direction of the arrow (left or right) on the dashboard fuel gauge indicates the location of the fuel filler.

Step 2: Choose a Payment Method

  • Credit card: Insert the card, you may need to enter a PIN code or license plate number.

  • Cash / IC card: Cash can be used, and some stations accept IC cards (Suica, ICOCA, etc.).

Step 3: Choose Fuel Type and Amount

Choose fuel type:

  • Regular gasoline (recommended): Red nozzle, marked “レギュラー 普通”.

  • Premium gasoline (prohibited): Yellow nozzle, marked “ハイオク 特級汽油”.

  • Diesel (prohibited): Green nozzle, marked “軽油 柴油”.

*To ensure the vehicle operates normally, be sure to select red regular gasoline to avoid adding other fuel types by mistake.

Select the amount of fuel:

  • You can choose “Full (満タン)” → Automatically fill up

  • Or specify the number of liters / amount (e.g., 10 liters, ¥3000)

Step 4: Refuel

  • Touch the static electricity removal pad to remove static electricity from your body.

  • Pick up the fuel nozzle and insert it into the fuel tank opening.

  • Press the handle to start refueling. After hearing a “click” sound, the fuel nozzle handle will loosen and stop refueling.

  • Keep holding the handle during the refueling process, do not let go.

Step 5: Completion and Receipt

  • After the fuel is full, put the fuel nozzle back.

  • Collect the receipt (some stations require pressing the “レシート” button). If you pay in cash, don’t forget to go to the change machine next to it to retrieve the remaining amount.

  • Confirm that the fuel tank cap is closed, and refueling is complete.
