Japan Driving Tips - Precautions for Road Height Differences

One of the most overlooked details when driving in Japan is the road height difference.
Unlike in Hong Kong or Taiwan, curbs at parking lots, gas stations, and narrow alleys are often higher. Without careful attention, it is very easy to scrape the chassis or bumpers.

Why Be Careful?

  1. Insurance Coverage Limits
Scratches on bumpers or the chassis are often not covered by basic insurance plans. You may be liable for repair costs and compensation.
  2. High Japanese Curbs
Curbs in Japan are generally higher than average, especially in rural areas or traditional shopping streets. Drive slowly and carefully when entering or exiting these zones.
  3. Low Clearance Risks
Vehicles with low ground clearance, such as sports sedans or large MPVs (7-seaters), are particularly vulnerable. Pay close attention to your angle when entering parking lots.

Driving Tips

  • Enter at an Angle Avoid driving straight over a curb. Approach at a slight angle and crawl forward slowly to protect your chassis.
  • Go Slow & Observe Maintain low speed. When you spot a height difference, stop and assess the clearance before proceeding. Avoid sudden braking or forcing your way through.
  • Watch for Yellow Markings Many parking lots use yellow paint to highlight uneven surfaces or steep drops. Stay alert when you see these visual warnings.
  • Choose the Right Vehicle If your itinerary includes many rural or narrow roads, consider renting a vehicle with higher ground clearance (such as an SUV) for a safer journey.
